Could not find game executable error when launching FiveM

Question: What can I do when encountering the following error:

  • Could not find game executable

Answer: This error means that FiveM could not find the Grand Theft Auto V (Legacy) install executable, meaning it is missing or no longer where you originally installed it. 

You can resolve this error by using the following steps to help the FiveM client locate your GTAV installation.

Locate GTAV Legacy install executable

  1. Press Windows key+R on your keyboard
  2. Type the following into the dialog to open the FiveM client in the Windows File Explorer:
    • %localappdata%/FiveM/FiveM.app
  3. Press Enter
  4. Right-click the CitizenFX.ini file
  5. Select Open With
  6. Select Notepad
  7. Edit the path on the IVPATH= line pointing to your GTAV installation
    • Rockstar Games Launcher default: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V
    • Steam default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V
    • Epic Games Launcher default: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\GTAV
    • Xbox app for PC default: C:\XboxGames\Grand Theft Auto V\Content
